Tomorrow is Food Day which is not to be confused with World Food Day (October 16th). Why not start the celebration early by checking on your political reps’ records on food policy issues? The group Food Policy Action has made it easy for us by ranking all sitting US senators and representatives using a 0-100 scorecard. If you don’t like what you see, take heart: November 6th is just around the bend…but probably not close enough if you have the misfortune of living in a swing state!
Here’s (another) something I didn’t know: Peat bogs have far greater capacity to store CO2 than rain forests, or so says Ian Crosher, a scientist with Natural England. It’s for this reason that the British government has put in place a time
table for ending peat use in backyard gardening by 2020, a plan which has many gardeners screaming “for bogs’ sake!”Congrats to Sam Hayward (Fore Street), Melissa Kelly (Primo), and Steve and Michelle Corry (La Petite Jacqueline) on their James Beard Award nominations.
