Who is Roger Doiron?
Roger Doiron is the founder of Kitchen Gardeners International (KGI), a US-based network of food-gardening advocates. He’s best known for launching the “Eat the View” campaign, which called for a vegetable garden to be planted on the White House lawn — a campaign that contributed to the Obama White House establishing its own kitchen garden in 2009, the first at the White House since Eleanor Roosevelt’s wartime Victory Garden.
Through KGI, Doiron helped run grant programs such as “Sow It Forward” and “SeedMoney,” which funded community and school food-garden projects for low-income families, schools, and community groups. His advocacy work has also touched on “right to garden” issues — supporting people who’ve faced local council or code disputes over front-yard vegetable gardens.
About Me
I’m not Roger Doiron, and this isn’t his site — but his work is a big part of why this one exists. I came across his food-gardening advocacy years ago, and it planted (sorry) the idea that a garden could be about more than just how it looks.
For me, that idea took root in flowers rather than vegetables. I’m Levi Dahlenburg, and I’ve spent the last 10 years slowly turning a fairly ordinary Australian backyard in TARAMPA QLD 4311 into a cutting garden — dahlias, zinnias, whatever native blooms will put up with our summers. Somewhere along the way I got just as interested in the bones of a garden as what’s growing in it.
This site is my way of carrying a little of that original kitchen-gardening spirit forward, with an Australian accent and a flower lover’s bias.
